Campaigns: Supporting People

Supporting people and older homeless people. The Supporting People programme provides many opportunities to improve housing and support services for vulnerable older homeless people. The UK Coalition on Older Homelessness and Homeless Link have taken the opportunity to influence the five year Supporting People strategies, which local authorities are currently preparing, by commissioning a report on the opportunities for older homeless people under Supporting People. The report is aimed at Supporting people commissioners and commissioners in health and social services, as well as providers of services to older homeless people. It aims to raise awareness of the opportunities for creative commissioning of new services, to influence and change existing services, to encourage provider organisations to work collaboratively and to work in partnership with other commissioners and funders. The report pulls together evidence of numbers of older homeless people in this country and provides illuminating case studies which illustrate the contrasting costs to the public purse of providing appropriate support to older homeless people or neglecting to meet their needs adequately. Innovative and interesting examples of practice that is provided to older homeless people by Supporting People around the country is also described in the report.

The summary of the report and the full version are both available for download:
